People With Hypertension More Likely to Develop Type 2 Diabetes. The available evidence suggests that all adults with high blood pressure readings that are consistently greater than 135/80 mm Hg benefit from tighter control of risk factors associated with diabetes for the prevention of coronary heart disease. In studies of type 2 diabetes, data has shown that almost 75 percent of patients with kidney problems had high blood pressure. In those with type 2 diabetes but no kidney problems, the rate of high blood pressure was about 40 percent.
